What Is a Polaroid?

A Polaroid is an instant photograph, named after the Polaroid Corporation founded by Edwin Land. The Model 95, launched in 1948, was the first commercial instant camera: it exposed, developed, and ejected a finished print in about 60 seconds.

Two traits define the Polaroid look:

  1. A white frame around the image

  2. A thicker bottom border — extra space where the chemical developer pod once sat, and where photographers traditionally wrote captions by hand

The format peaked in the 1970s and survives today as a design aesthetic. Artists like Andy Warhol and Ansel Adams used instant film extensively; Warhol's Big Shot portraits are inseparable from the format. Modern Polaroid cameras, Fujifilm Instax, and Instagram's original app icon all draw on the same visual language.
